Make it a point to clean your teeth and gums thoroughly every day. Use a very soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean your teeth and gum tissues, twice a day for two minutes. Use gentle pressure–think “massage” more than “scrub.” Floss your teeth once each day for two to three minutes. If flossing has become difficult for you, talk with your dentist about other interdental cleaning alternatives. These could include such options as a pre-strung flossers or a water flosser. The addition of an over-the-counter therapeutic mouthwash may be a good idea for the hygiene habits of some people. Read labels carefully if you have trouble with alcohol, as many mouthwashes contain high amounts of alcohol.
You’ve heard it before, and you’ll hear it again in this blog: stop using tobacco products. Not only is tobacco use terrible for your overall health, it also promotes tooth decay and gum disease. Gum disease is especially damaging to your mouth. The best thing you can do for your smile–and your overall health–is to quit smoking, using tobacco and the like.
